In 2003, the total demand for phenylacetic acid in China was about 14000 tons, with a consumption structure of penicillin G accounting for 85%, other pharmaceuticals accounting for 4%, spices accounting for 7%, and pesticides and other fields accounting for 4%.

With the development of domestic industries such as spices, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides, the demand for phenylacetic acid will further increase. It is expected that by 2005, China's pharmaceutical industry will consume approximately 14000 tons of phenylacetic acid, the pesticide industry will consume 500 tons, and the spice industry will consume approximately 2000 tons. Combined with the consumption in other fields, it is expected that the total demand for phenylacetic acid in China will reach 18000 tons in 2005.
